2011 REEL Farm to School: Video Contest

Stay tuned for details about the 2012 REEL Farm to School Video Contest!

Check out one of this year’s entries…

Randolph Elementary Farm Kids used their art and moviemaking to express how important our school’s Farm To School program has been to them. They made this short video as part of a VT FEED (Food Education Every Day) challenge and to show at the Farm to School Day at the Vermont Statehouse. There really is a statue of Ceres the Goddess of Agriculture on top of the golden dome of the Vermont Statehouse but she is not as colorful as the one made by our art students.

How cool is food at your school? Are you making changes to what your school serves and where it comes from? Are you looking for a way to use your creative skills to inspire others? Looking to get behind a video camera or create a digital story? Have a Farm to School program that deserves statewide recognition?

If you are among the hundreds of Vermont students and schools promoting healthier and stronger communities with Farm to School programs, we want to showcase your good work in The Reel Farm to School: Vermont Farm to School Video Contest.

The Video Contest will:

  • Recognize how you, as students, are changing your local food system
  • Build support to get local and healthier school food
  • Create community connections

The Contest is jointly sponsored by Vermont FEED in partnership with the Orton Family Foundation, the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, and Vermont Public Television.

Who

5th-12th grade students are invited to submit a video or digital story, highlighting Farm to School activities in their community.  Teams should be 2-5 students with a teacher advisor.

What

A 30 second to 3 minute video should highlight food system change through the 3 C’s of Farm to School connections: Cafeteria, Classroom and Community. Videos can be personal narratives, documentaries, music videos, or community stories, and can be humorous, serious, or both! Use your imagination to show what Farm to School means for you and your school.

For a little inspiration, check out the National Farm to School Video Contest. And, especially, our favorite, I Fell in Love with Broccoli. All video entries will be displayed on the Vermont FEED website.

When

Submissions are open October 15 and due by December 15, 2010. Winners will be announced at the Vermont Statehouse on January 20, 2011 at the fourth annual Farm to School Awareness Day.  See the website for more info.
